On the Thursday we woke early to catch a mini bus to Cameron Highlands. It was only a couple of hours journey. When we arrived we wandered trying to find a guest house. It seemed places were a bit more expensive here, but we were determined to find a cheap-ish place. Luckily, we wandered into the town and a man came running after us offering a room for 30 RM which is £6, but shared bathroom. We had a look and actually it was really nice so we took it. What a good find. However, a lady there was a bit rude to Graeme so perhaps you don't get the customer service for that cost. Oh well.
We then headed out for a wander around town and grabbed a nice fried rice Chinese dish, we tried ordering 1 small one each but the guy told us we might as well order a big one between the 2 of us, saved us a few pennies. We then went to get a tour for the following day and the guy told us not to bother with the full day one as it wasn't that good. So we paid half the price and got the half day one, it seems like they don't like taking our money around here, which is good news.
We had a relaxing afternoon pottering about before trying to find a waterfall and ending up walking double the distance we needed to and getting to a dead end. On the way back though thankfully we found it, but it wasn't that spectacular so probably not worth the walk. We then grabbed some Fish and chips and chicken and chips and relaxed again.
The following day we were picked up by a Land Rover which looked to be on its last legs and headed off with 2 other people on there honeymoon. The guy said he had been driving 4x4 since he was 7 so he was a professional, he was obviously very good as he told us this while looking straight at us and not watching the road or the cliff edge we were driving along. He said he had a 4x4 that was much better then this one but this one was the companies.
We first went to a butterfly farm where there were millions of the things, plus one caught in a spider web with a stripped spider on it, which was pretty cool. We then headed to a tea plantation and got told about how the make tea. Quin you would have loved it, you can actually get a job as a professional tea taster. Afterwards we drove up the tallest mountain in the Cameron Highlands and climbed up a lookout tower and saw spectacular sights. We all headed down the tower except Rachel who stayed up to get some more photo's, then a crowed of about 30 Chinese tourists all arrived and decided to go up all at the same time so she got stuck with them. I'm surprised the tower didn't topple over.
We then got taken into a Mossy Rain Forest where we learnt a bit about the plants and got covered in mud. We were warned to be careful what we grabbed hold off as it could be a snake. He said the day before he had given a tour to a Japanese group who had been laughing at everything he had said all day which he wasn't sure why. He had seen a snake so went ahead of the snake and told them to stay where they were for a bit, but they just kept walking, that's when he realised none of them spoke English, apparently non of them stepped on the snake though. Unfortunately the only wildlife we saw was a centipede.
He then took us to a strawberry farm to try jams and dried strawberry's and get some ice cream mmmmm. He asked us if we wanted to do another tour in the afternoon, which we decided to so after a quick stop for some noodles and omelette then got picked up again. But this time he had his own 4x4 so guess this was his own private tour without the tour company, no wonder it was so cheap.
We arrived at the area and it was chucking it down with rain. So we went in some aboriginal huts and met someone who looked like Michael Jackson and got given a example of how to us a blow pipe to fire a poison dart. We then got to have a go at firing it at a teddy bear. Since the rain still hadn't stopped he took us to a waterfall a bit further up the road which was pretty impressive. Unfortunately the rain was still coming, he pointed the path out to us where we were suppose to walk but it was like a river and he told us we couldn't go, even though I said my shoes were waterproof. So we started driving back towards town and the road which had been clear on the way there was now a mess, we must have passed around 20 land slides, I'm glad we were in a 4x4.
We stopped off at a tea place on the way back and had a cuppa while overlooking the mountains then got back to town. We had been recommended to try a banana leaf curry so we got one of those and it was impressive, a banana leaf with rice on, about 7 different curry's, soup and popperdoms all for £1.50, excellent.
