I'm not really sure what I was expecting out of Freiburg. It is on the edge of the Black Forest which I've read is really nice. But I didn't know if I was going to actually be able to go into the Black Forest from there, or if there were hikes or what. I did my usual thing and just booked a couple of nights in the hostel with the plan to mostly just figure things out when I got there.
On the first day I just checked out the town, which is really nice. Lots of nice old style German architecture with a large Cathedral in the middle. Down the sides of many streets they have channels with flowing water. I'm not sure if these serve any purpose or are just for aesthetics, but they do look nice. Also it seems that being on the edge of a forest that they probably cleared it to build the town, so a lot of trees are still left standing and there are quite a few gardens and green areas fill with trees as well as a lot of streets with trees lining them. It's a very good looking town. I also took a bit of a hike up to a lookout point in the forest. Well I guess it's in the forest anyway, just on the edge of the forest I suppose.
I met a couple of English girls and an Irish one that night. They were then also meeting up with a German couple. We had a few drinks at the hostel and then headed out into the town. The first place we went to was a shooter bar, just like the one I went to in Frankfurt. This time my first shot was a 'Queen' which was some raspberry flavoured liqueur with whipped cream on top. It was delicious. I can't remember the name of the other one, but it was a aqua type colour and didn't taste all that good.
After this place we headed into another club. I fell a little behind the group chatting to a local I ran into. This was unfortunate because we ended up getting denied entry for being too drunk. I'm almost certain if I was with the rest of the group I would have got in just fine. Also unfortunate that none of them seemed to care enough to come check where I was. They were all pretty drunk and we'd only just met, so it was understandable.
While I was waiting outside though to see if they would check a couple of German girls came out and asked me to join them. So I did. The night starts to become a bit of a blur at this point. There was another club, some dancing, quite a few more drinks and a kebab involved though. And by the time I got back to my own bed the sun was up.
I didn't really get much sleep as I had to check out and then catch a train to Fussen. It was about 6 hours worth of train with 4 changeovers. It all went horribly wrong pretty much instantly. The very first train arrive 5 minutes late to the station. Which meant it got to the first stop 5 minutes late. My changeover time was only 7 minutes to begin with and my connection was already gone when I reached the platform.
The ticket which I had bought was technically only met to be used for the specific trains I had book (it was about an extra 30 euro to get one which was basically valid for all trains between those stops on the day). So I was a little concerned, but figured I could probably play the innocent tourist card if it came up. It wasn't my fault I missed the connection anyway, so maybe they wouldn't even care. The next train I caught was 2 hours later and wasn't quite going the same route. I basically was going to have to make it up as I went along.
Thankfully one of the stop was one which the previous itinerary had, so I just got off there and checked when the next train along my initial itinerary was. I only ended up being checked for my ticket once, and the guy didn't even bring up the fact that it wasn't the original plan (if he could even tell that). In fact he was super friendly and made sure I knew which stop I was getting off at to get my next and final connection.
It was on this train also that I met a Ukrainian guy who was living in Freiburg and also just happened to be going to Fussen and was staying at the same hostel. Turned out he was actually lucky to meet me because he didn't realise that we were arriving after the reception of the hostel closed. I had already contacted them and they were leaving a key for me and gave me instructions on getting inside and all that. So he called them and it turned out we would only be 15mins late, so they stayed behind a bit to check us in.
