It seems to be getting harder and harder to find the time to write these entries, and often when I do have the time I either don't have access to a computer or I'm just too exhausted to be bothered. Anyway, the last entry left off with Saul talking to the members of the band that we saw at a bar and asking if they had a couch for us for the next night. Turns out they did, but they lived in Lyon, and we were in Nimes.
So what did we do? Well the next day we hitchhiked to Lyon in what will probably be one of the best hitches I'll ever do. We took our backpacks and "Lyon" sign down to one of the toll booths at the entry to the highway and after only about 5 minutes were getting picked up. The guy was heading to Italy but assured as he would be passing by Lyon and would drop us off. After taking a fork which seemed was the opposite of the sign pointing to Lyon I brought up Google Maps to check. Turns out we weren't going to be going anywhere Lyon.
The guy apologised and said he would drop us off at the next town and we could hitch from there. Problem is that now what was a straight shot on the freeway would be a series of tricky hitches across several smaller country roads. It was not looking good.
But, after an hour or so of chatting this guy decided that "what the hell, I'll take you to Lyon". So he took the next turn off to Lyon and drove about 300km out of his way just to take us to Lyon. When we got there we bought him a beer, had a couple ourselves and then he was back on his way to Italy, only now he got to take the scenic way through the Alps.
Now that we were in Lyon we went to meet the band members we were staying with, who turned out to be huge hippies. So what did we do, well we went on a protest with them against Monsanto. Between the rain and the riot police the protest was kind of a bust however, and everyone just went for coffee instead.
That night and the next they took us to some live music venues which was awesome. The second one especially was some African music thing and it kicked arse. We might not have done the "touristy Lyon" if such a thing even exists, but we got to see a different side of it which is probably even cooler. I even got to my washing with homemade laundry detergent. Oh and we also went to a barber shop and got haircuts by a guy who didn't speak a word of English, so that was also interesting. It worked out ok.
After a couple of nights though we were back in the same predicament that we were in in Nimes, in that we still didn't have any plans nor accommodation. So we decided to hire a car. Driving on the other side of the road was pretty damn interesting and challenging. Hadn't been driving for 5 minutes before I ran the car up against the curb on the right side. But after a while I had the hang of judging the car from the other side. For whatever reason we decided to drive to Geneva.
We got there quite late, at like 10pm, parked the car somewhere and then just slept in the car. The next morning we were woken up by a ticket inspector at like 7am saying we needed a ticket. So we left heading northeast further into Switzerland towards Lausanne.
