I'm coming to the end of my 4 week trip to the USA
After Lincoln, i drove across Maine- it is huge. I went through the highlans region of mountains and lakes. It is also the end of the Appalachian trail.
I must mention the lovely town of Dover-Foxcroft which looked well cared for and the few people i met were exceptionally friendlly and the youngsters politely opening doors for you.
In NewHampshire I naively hoped to be able to drive up massive Mt Washington (over 6000ft) but I was too late to drive up and too early for their snowmobile to operate. It was a Sunday and everywhere was crawling with hikers all kitted up.
Now I pootled on to Vermont which is famous for its autumn colours. Although there were some remnants it was mostly wintertime colours. When I left there was a sprinkling of snow.
I stayed in a motel in Rutland but although all the hotels have no smoking rooms, this one had a vent that was connected to smoking rooms and when I was ready to go to bed the bathroom stank of smoke which seeped into the bedroom. It was too late to go out and complain and change rooms.
Consequently I didn't sleep well.
Then I reluctantly wended my way back to Portland. Again passing many beautiful lakes and houses.
I am just about to return the car having driven over 2,000 miles in 6 days. Then I take the bus to the airport in Boston.
This will be the end of the America blog as hopefully all will be plain sailing from now back to Falmouth!
I have thoroughly enjoyed this trip. The scenery has been spectacular and the people exceptionally friendly.
