Saturday morning and we got up a bit later than we normally do, so it's shower etc and head out. We need to book train tickets for the next leg. We ask how to get to the railway station and are told to get on the LRT system, this is the Overland Light Transit railway, it's very new, clean and efficient. The Station is only 1 stop away and so we try to get the tickets. It's a ticket and wait system. Our number is called and we try to get organised. Communication wasnt too good and we get told that it's a certain amount we hadnt bargained on, so we opt to find more information. The price quoted was wrong and so we get back to the counter knowing what we need to book and the costs involved. We need to get the 9.15pm overnight sleeper to Penang, this will arrive at 5.30am....then it'll be a wait until 2.30pm and the train will then take another 12 hours until it arrives in Bangkok, Thailand. The sunday night train was fully booked and so we can only get on the Monday night train. It's a bit of a pain as we'll have to stay another night in KL...not that it's a bad place to be. We headed into a local place for food and had some nice cheap Malay food, rice, prawns, chilli beef and very good it was too.
As we wont have a great deal of time to explore Kuala Lumpur we opt to buy tickets for the Hop on/Hop off bus that will take 4 hours to go around the city. These tours are a good way to get an overview and you can also see the places that will be the best to get food, shops and find places of general excitement. The tour was good, we sat in the open section on the double decker bus. We visited the Royal Palace, that was impressive. There's lots to see and there's plenty of old and new here. The city planners of past and present have made sure there's plenty of green lungs within the city. The place we liked on the map was the Central Market and so we looked forward to seeing that and getting off for a wander. We got to the Central market 4 hours later and guess where it was? Right opposite the hotel we're staying at.
Nightime was spent in the exciting Chinatown area, again a 2 minute stroll from the hotel. It's good here, the smells of Asia, roasting chestnuts, garlic and the pungent smells of fried tofu. It's been a good day and feel that we've seen quite a lot. KL closes early and so we're in bed by 11pm. We've got itchy feet and want to be on the move but we're stuck. As I'd said before, it's not a bad place to be stuck.
