Other than my ramblings, I will quickly update our progress. After Berlin , we visited Wolfsburg and the VW Autostadt, wound our way down the magnificent Rhine gorge with a castle at every bend, visited the Kloster Erebacher, the 11th century monastery where all of the interior scenes for The Name Of The Rose were filmed, visited Stuttgart to see the Porsche and Mercedes Museums, and spent some time in the Schwarzwald, the Black Forest, cuckoo clock land. If it is one thing that Germans do well is cars. While in Deutschland, I was fortunate to visit the VW Autostrada, a theme park built next to the factory in Wolfsburg, and the Porsche and Mercedes museums in Stuttgart. Autobahns. After driving over 2000kms in Germany, it makes our road laws, particularly our speed limits seem ridiculous. On the Autobahns, there are sections where there are no speed limits. The majority of drivers seem to sit at 130 -140 with a few driving at various speeds much faster. No one, I repeat no one sits on the outside lane, the fast lane. A museum day today in Berlin and there are many and have some pretty amazing exhibits. The cream of crop is the Pergamon which has 3 amazing reconstructions, the Pergamon alter dating back to the 2nd century AD. It is 35 metres wide and 33 metres deep with sculptured friezes showing the battles between the giants and the Greek gods. You walk into the room and it is enormous.
