Autobahns. After driving over 2000kms in Germany, it makes our road laws, particularly our speed limits seem ridiculous. On the Autobahns, there are sections where there are no speed limits. The majority of drivers seem to sit at 130 -140 with a few driving at various speeds much faster. No one, I repeat no one sits on the outside lane, the fast lane. They overtake and immediately pull back into the inside lane. There are strict rules on when trucks can overtake, and trucks are not allowed on the Autobahns on Sundays. You see them parked in stations on the sides of the road. Speed limits are in force for some corners, at intersections and across large bridges. And it all seems to work very well. The Autobahns are no better than our newer freeways, in many cases our new ones are better, and yet we drive at 110 and fall asleep from boredom. The German road toll is no worse than ours and they certainly get where they are going quicker. I wonder when will our politicians get smart and focus on driver education and more realistic speed limits.
