Getting lost while exploring
Checked out of our hotel in Playa del Carmen earlish so we could hit the beach. We found a spot of sand in front of one of the fancy hotels were guests were on deck chairs drinking cocktails. It was so hot and the ocean was like a warm bath. I had to get in and out several times. Didn't think we were there long enough to get burnt, I was sadly mistaken. Got lost trying to get back to hotel....this is becoming a theme. Just wanted to get out of the sun. Grabbed our bags and lugged them to the ferry terminal to get across to Cozumel. The lady at the kiosk appreciated my attempt at Spanish in my foreign accent and upgraded us to first class. We also purchased discounted tickets for snorkelling tomorrow at 10.30am. So grateful for the ferry upgrade cause we were inside undercover in air con & able to order margaritas. Sam was struggling with the rocking of the boat, but managed to keep his cocktail down. Exited the ferry and had no idea where the hotel was located, so got in a cab. Turns out it was literally 300m away, cheap cab ride lol. Went up the escalator to the hotel and started to think maybe he has dropped us at the wrong hotel cause it's so fancy. They have our reservation and turns out I got a mega deal booking it, I got a 60% discount on the normal room rate. They bring us complementary drinks at check in and the concierge is a major NZ movie buff so chat with him for ages. Sam was hungry so didn't waste time before heading out for a late lunch, we made sure we had plenty of sunblock on. Got talked into eating at a Mexican restaurant that was offering 2 for 1 margaritas. The host guy seemed really nice and funny. Ordered a Mexican platter and then our drinks arrived. Worst margaritas of the trip and the server had started to get annoying and told Sam he was drunk and not to tell his boss. Then the food comes out and we eat a bit but are both fearing food poisoning. Decided to pay the bill and split as I could tell Sam was getting dark on the place. Then as I'm paying the server comes and hugs me, I say I don't want a hug and he plants a really unwanted kiss on my check. As we were bolting away he started to chase and yell after us, I don't think he appreciated the tiny tip I left. I don't care cause he didn't deserve one. Came back to our hotel and swam in the pool that is shaded and overlooks the ocean and port. Chilled in the room for a bit before heading out for dinner. There are so many Americans everywhere here, we might as well be in America. All the Mexicans assume we are American and quote us everything to us in USD which makes it harder for me to work out how many NZD things are. Found a way better place for dinner that was right in front of the port as the sun was setting. After dinner we had a look around some shops and brought some token Mexican souvenirs.
