Getting lost while exploring
Woke early to pack and enjoy breakfast before our 9am tour bus pick up. The travel agent that arranged the NYC portion of our trip organised this tour for me cause I didn't want to stress about our luggage etc getting from Merida to Playa del Carmen. We sat in reception in eager anticipation of the buses arrival. Waited till 9.20am before asking the receptionist to phone to confirm the time, we were relieved when she said they were the only 5 minutes away. Van finally arrived at 9.53am and dropped us a the bus about 10 minutes later. Later on when other guests joked to us about being on time back to bus we find out the driver had blamed us for the tour starting late. Didn't realise we were also going to stop at X-Cajum which was an awesome bonus cause it's beautiful. It is a natural pit or sinkhole that resulted from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposed groundwater underneath. We had to shower before getting in, so I wasted all the sunblock & insect repellent I'd put on that morning. It was lovely to swim in the refreshing water so close to catfish and other fish. We had an hour here before heading to lunch. The lunch was way better than I expected, I didn't really know what to expect but my expectation was a sandwich or something similar. It was full buffet, where I over ate massively. Near the end of lunch traditional Mayan dancing was performed on stage. Followed by some kind of warrior dance, which included an impressive fire display. From there we arrived in Chichen Itza which are ancient Mexican temples and are one of the seven wonders of the world. We arrived right in the peak of the heat. It was great to have a guide that spoke English and kept in the shade wherever possible. It was SO hot and I drunk so much water, which was close to boiling by the end. We then had an hour to walk around unguided and take photos etc. Near the end of this time we got an ice block and chilled water, which was so cold it hurt to swallow. We then had to swap buses and turned out a German couple on our bus was staying at the same hotel as us in Playa del Carmen. Arrived at our hotel to find out we didn't have a reservation and I'd accidentally booked a hotel with the same name in Spain. Thankfully the guy on front desk was really helpful and he gave us a room at 20% less than the normal nightly rate. Well worth it cause the hotel facilities and pool are amazing. Have emailed the hotel in Spain to cancel and explain, hopefully they don't charge us. Fingers crossed. Had dinner at an American wing restaurant nearby and then came back to the hotel pool bar for a swim and margaritas.
