Getting lost while exploring
Managed to get back to sleep and then didn't want to wake up to my alarm, but forced myself out of bed. Breakfast at this hotel is great, freshly squeezed orange juice, plate of fresh fruit and omelettes. Was starting to get really hot, really quick! Headed out to explore and said lets just walk this way and see where we end up. After quite some time Sam had had enough, was tired of walking "aimlessly" and was too hot. Spent the next hour trying to find the centre of town. Stumbled across an antique store and what would you know in a cabinet are two things I collect side by side. A beautiful compact & a squirrel. Sold! It's meant to be. Bump into a Mayan man named Miguel outside one of the temples wanting to get us into a restaurant, as they do. Explain we aren't hungry. He recognises our unusual accent and gives us some advice on where to go and shop. I can't get over how friendly and welcoming the people are in Merida. They are also quite tiny, Sam and I who aren't tall look like giants next to some of these Mexicans. Miguel walks us to a beautiful store where we can buy the best quality real deal hammocks ands hats. Look around the whole store and end up buying a massive blue and white handmade hammock. Miguel told us he had slept in one every night of his life and replaces it every 5 years. So this should last us a lifetime. Finally find the centre and visit the facade of the Casa de Montejo which is the first and oldest house built in Merida between 1543 and 1549. Then wanting to escape the fourth degree heat we visited the Museo de la Cuidad which exhibits contemporary artworks and colonial history. Make our way in the direction of our hotel and stop occasionally at bars to escape the heat and sample another margarita. When we reach the hotel I prove my amateur/drunk Spanish skills when I say gracias to the front desk guy instead of hola or buenos tardes. I immediately jump in the pool and utter six words I've never said in my life "I wish the water was colder!". Then out of nowhere it starts to rain and we come into the room and Sam has a siesta. Once I wake Sam up we head out for our final night in Merida. Find a local Mexican restaurant where ladies are making tortillas at the front. Some of the best Mexican we'd had yet.
