Getting lost while exploring
We spent our final day in Mexico City trying to find a museum, we found many but they were all closed and guarded by literally hundreds of riot police. There were also army trucks driving around. We questioned what they were expecting? We later found out from our concierge that it was Teachers Day, so there were many families in the city because kids were off school. It was to make people feel safe and protected. Suited me! We gave up on museums and walked in the opposite direction and spent hours walking through markets selling every knock off product imaginable. So much junk at really cheap prices. Only thing I purchased was nail clippers cause I needed some....big spender. Later we taxied to the airport to catch our flight to Merida. On the way we saw a grown man squatting and taking a poo in the middle of the road right next to where our taxi had stopped in traffic. He had everything on display and seemed unaware he had an audience. Was so shocking and also really sad. It was our first Interjet flight, who are Mexicans equivalent to Jetstar, so I was a bit nervous. Everything run smoothly, apart from taking off 20 mins late which didn't bother us at all. We even got a bag of crisps and a drink. And the planes had lots of leg room. So they are leagues above Jetstar. Disembarked plane and the heat hit us instantly, so much hotter here. It was still thirty degrees in the early evening. Got a taxi and the driver spoke English which was awesome cause Sam loves a good chat. He gave us a full run down on Merida's history and what sites were worth seeing. He also drove us right around the city so we would know were to go during our stay. This place is another level beautiful. He also assured us that Merida is one of the safest places in Mexico to visit. Our hotel is so beautiful, our room is awesome with ridiculously high ceilings and traditional tiles etc. Had a quick shower and changed before exploring. Realised I had left a bag filled with toiletries in our hotel at Mexico City, so gutted as had so many products in it. All replaceable but kicking myself for forgetting it. Found an awesome outdoor dining area which had every cuisine possible and ordered some tasty Mexican and local craft beer. Then headed to the square to watch and listen to a traditional show. So much culture on display here and all the buildings are stunning. Got an ice cream and ate it in the park, there were so many people out considering it was 10pm on Monday. Have absolutely loved our first day here and can't wait to get up and explore more tomorrow. Still jet lagged and waking up in middle of the night wide awake. It's 3.30am as I write, but meh who cares it's not like I have work or anything tomorrow! I'm probably just excited.
