Getting lost while exploring
Slept in a bit and decided we would be big kids for the day and visit Disneyland. Didn't hit the road till 11ish and weren't anticipating the traffic & congestion in the suburb of Disney which is a town in itself. We were expecting it to be like Dreamworld on the Gold Coast were you park out front, buy tickets and enter. But it was full on and there were Police directing traffic to available parking which took close to 45 minutes from our arrival to enter a car park.
The car park offered a shuttle for the lazy people (everyone) but we walked as it was less than a 10-minute walk. Took about half an hour to get tickets, but as we entered the gates at 1pm the man welcomed us "to the happiest place on Earth" so it all became worth the wait. We relaxed when we discovered that the park was open until midnight, so we had plenty of time.
Queued for our first ride, Pirates of the Caribbean which was the best of the day. They don't do anything by halves at Disneyland, everything was BIG budget and over the top.
Obviously, this park is geared for kids and would be appreciated most my little eyes, but we loved every minute of it. I honestly felt like I was fulfilling my childhood dreams and queuing for some of the rides for nearly an hour didn't really bother me. They trick you in the queues by zigzagging them around corners and up & down stairs, there's plenty to observe while you're waiting.
We went on most of the rides excluding the really little kids ones and watched a couple of the parades and shows that we stumbled on. We found a place that served root beer floats and extreme ice cream sundaes, it also had a comedy show that was due to start so we waited for that. Sam poked the ice cream in his root beer float to the bottom, it foamed and overflowed all over the table.
Sam had just cleaned up when he got dragged up on stage as one of three potential husbands for the Mayors daughter. He was promptly blind folded and the Mayors daughter (a man in drag) was brought out to inspect her potential husbands. They were then asked a couple of questions.
First question, if you were an animal, what animal would you be? Sam answers that he would be a hippo.....which gives the comedians nothing to work with and it's apparent by the look on their faces that this is a first. The second guy replies that he would be a lion, to the comedians relief as this is obviously a more common response.
Second question, if you were to serenade my daughter with a love song, what would you sing? Sam giggles, shrugs and can't think of a love song. He is prompted to just name any song, the first song to come to his head.....nothing but blankness. The Mayors daughter doesn't mind as "he's just so cute".
To Sam's relief he didn't have to marry the Mayors daughter and was able to leave the stage at this point and enjoy his root beer float. By then I'd nearly finished the ice cream sundae that we were meant to be sharing.
We decided to stay for the fireworks display at 9.25pm. We stood where everyone was congregating close to this time assuming it was for the fireworks. But ended up with a good possie for Mickey Mouses Fantasmic musical spectacular. The show was filled with incredible special effects and a re-enacted Peter Pan/Hook fight scene on a magnificent ship that appeared from nowhere. All of the famous Disney characters were involved at some point and made me shed a few tears. This was the highlight of the day and well worth staying for.
The fireworks followed a few minutes later and were over the top amazing as well. We left around 10pm after nine entertaining hours. Disneyland really is the happiest place on Earth!
