With only three stops left in Asia and just £500 left in our Asia budget we knew Malaysia was going to be cheap and it's actually been relatively easy. Mind you our diet over the last few days has mainly consisted of Asian pot noodles and Crunchie bars. We've also saved money by chilling in our hostel quite a lot, so much so that in 24 hours we've both managed to complete the iPhone game Jet Pack Joyrider - if you haven't got it, download it now its amazingly addictive!
Of course we have seen the sights and as usual spent the first day wandering the streets of Georgetown. On a mission for Starbucks we stumbled across a shopping mall, not exactly Westfield but it had an arcade with a FIFA 11 game, and more importantly a cinema that costs £2.20 a ticket - our date night sorted.
The cinema was actually massive and we went to see Olympus has Fallen (a new Gerard Butler film). It's very far fetched but well worth the watch. To be honest seeing as we normally go to the cinema at least once a month I think any film would have been amazing, we were craving it so much!
The entertainment continued afterwards when we went to get a bike taxi home in the torrential rain. The adorable old Malaysian man literally covered us so only our eyes could see outside, yet still we got wet. The rain was shortly followed by the most amazing thunderstorm, and luckily we got back and inside our hostel before the lightening struck. It literally sounded like a bomb, I screamed, Liam hid under the covers.
The next evening we hopped on the local bus and went to Penang Hill. Much like Victoria Peak in Hong Kong it was a cable car which took you up to see the city from a height. It wasn't as breathtaking as Hong Kong but when it went dark the view was rather lovely!
Today, having got the hang of the buses and so we could make the most of how cheap they are, we headed further afield to one of Penang's beach resorts Batu Ferringhi, yet another lovely beach.
We leave Penang tomorrow morning and make our way to Kuala Lumpur for 5 nights. Our Asia budget now stands at £360...bring it on!
