Our final port of call for Asia was Singapore, by the the most expensive city/country on our Asia itinerary. With this in mind we prepared ourselves for a 'boring' four days before boarding our flight to Aus, but it was quite the opposite. We lived like Kings! Luckily one of Liam's old colleagues, John, who is now a Singapore expat, kindly invited us to stay with him and his girlfriend for a couple of nights. It was a rare, but welcome reversal to spend our first couple of nights seeing the city through the eyes of an expat (rather than a dirty backpacker). One highlight was gaining free entry to the tallest tower in Singapore for an expensive Corona and a gorgeous sunset view of the city. John and Yasmin were perfect hosts and we can't thank them enough. The Singaporean hospitality didnt end there; on Saturday one of Dad's colleagues a Singapore native, Charles, offered to take us on a city tour for the day. He has a car, which is a massive luxury in Singapore due to the government's extortionate tax systems. We were expecting Charles to spend a few hours showing us around but instead he chauffeured us to almost every tourist location there is and was the finest and most helpful tour guide you could have asked for. We quickly realised that Singapore nationals LOVE eating so of course Charles took us to brunch, lunch and finally dinner with his Son and Fiance. We and our stomach's were extremely overwhelmed. Thank you again Charles! On our final night we made the short MRT journey to Raffles Hotel for the World famous, and of course overpriced Singapore Sling cocktail. It just had to be done.
So there it is, 11 weeks, 7 countries, 4 planes, 3 boats, and 17 buses later, our South-East Asia adventure has come to an end and what an amazing part of the world - so rich in culture and life changing experiences. Being out here completely changed our perspective on life and has truely opened our eyes. We've had the time of our lives so far and met some great people on our way, most of which we're looking forward to meeting on our next leg down under.
Farewell Asia we'll miss you, G'day Australia let the fun commence!
