After a long 6-hour bus journey to get to Hot water beach I was looking forward to stretching my legs. A ten minute drive down the road was the start to the walking trail to Cathedral Cove, a secluded picturesque beach that made an appearance in the recent Narnia film. The walk took 45 minutes each way and was a little challenging in flip-flops but Bobbi and I made it and we were glad we made the effort. We had a paddle in the sea and took some photos but decided to stay clear of the waves, the undercurrent was very strong!
When we arrived back at the Top 10 holiday Park we checked in and opted for one of the four Glamping tents for the night, something different, that we hadn't experienced before. The T-pi style tents where surprisingly spacious and we even had a USB charger. However, our excitement soon deflated when the sun set and the tent was so cold to sleep in.
Within two hours either side of low tide visitors flock to the usually deserted Hot Water Beach to find hot water bubbling through the golden sand. The beach is rated as one of the world's most renowned beaches - A truly unique Kiwi experience. However, when we checked out the spot where you can experience the hot water, there were hundreds of visitors trying to claim their spot to dig their own spa pool. We opted to get up for 5.30am to catch the morning low tide. I am glad we did as we had the beach to ourselves even though it was cold and dark it was worth the early rise!
