After many late nights in NZ’s party town, we were picked up 10.30am. The bus followed the mighty Clutha River through Central Otago’s orchard and ever-growing wine area, we were headed for the coast.
We passed landmarks on route to Dunedin. Stopping for lunch in the old town Clyde and it’s hydro-electric dam. We arrived into NZ’s most vibrant student town – Dunedin. Where we were given a tour around the city and visited the view lookout before heading to the hostel. We decided to stay an extra night in Dunedin to really experience the city before continuing on the bus.
That evening we visited the cinema and saw The Huntsman. It cost only £5 so we couldn't say no! And finished the night playing pool.
The following day we visited the Cadbury chocolate factory and learnt about the history of Cadbury and chocolate. In the Sensory Lab we were able to discover and sample the different elements of the chocolate making process, from cocoa bean all the way through to our famous Cadbury Chocolate. We saw chocolate being tempered and experienced some of the essences we use to make some of the kiwi favourites. We even got to create a little Marvellous Creation of our own!
In the afternoon we visited the Speight’s Brewery tour. Since 1876 the brewery has been proudly producing Speight’s legendary ales from the same site in Rattray Street and continues to produce kegs of the good stuff to this day, so they say!! I am not a beer fan but they do do a great Speight's cider also.
The Speight's Tour is an interactive and informative guided tour taking you through the historic working brewery. On the tour you’ll see, smell, touch and taste the ingredients that go into making Speight’s beers - and of course get to sample some for yourself. Sam, Bobbi and I had a challenge to see how many 'free' classes we could consume. Sam managed 10 and Bobbi and I had around 7. This meant that we were no longer cooking dinner!!
