Stretching an epic 12 kilometres in length towards the Tasman Sea, the Franz Josef Glacier is the only glacier in the world to descend to less than 300metres above sea level. The low level means the frozen river is often surrounded by lush rainforests and a temperate climate.
We woke up on the morning of the 13th and looked out the window to see the glorious clear blue sky which meant that our glacier tour would be going ahead. I had been looking forward to this most of all and we have been extremely lucky with the weather as 70% of the tours do get cancelled each year.
Our 3-hour Ice Explorer tour involved a heli-ride to the Glacier where our guide then navigated us through the maze of ice and explained the dramatic environmental changes that have occurred over the last few years. We were warned by some of our other friends who had completed the tour a couple of days earlier that we needed to be prepared for the cold weather. So I wore three layers on the upper body and a pair of water resistant trousers but regretted it as soon as we started walking! Our guide said that we have had the best weather on the glacier then they have had in the past month so in the sunshine it was rather warm. The whole experience was magical and I loved every minute of it.
But that wasn't the end of the excitement for Bobbi and I. From the glacier we jumped straight into a mini bus which took us to the fox glacier which was the location for our Sky Dive!!!
We had both chosen to do the highest skydive available to us 16,500 feet. Nestled between New Zealand’s highest mountains, the Tasman Sea, stunning temperate rainforest, glowing glaciers, mirror lakes and braided river beds, Franz Josef and Fox Glacier has been described as one of the most beautiful places on earth and the perfect location for our skydive.
Excited wasn't even the work to describe how I was feeling! I couldn't wait. I think as it was my second skydive I knew what to expect so I could just enjoy it. Bobbi was very nervous and as she was out of the plane before me I had no choice but to follow her lead!!
I loved every moment and it was worth every penny. The photos and video is definitely worth the extra money and I am looking forward to showing my family when I get home.
I was glad we were in the first plane so we could enjoy the sunshine and watch the others follow. From the skydive I met the others from our bus in the Glacier Hot Pools before heading for a pizza night. This was by far the best day of my trip so far.
