Located in New Zealand's south island, Queenstown is renowned as the country's party capital and sits on the shore of crystal clear Lake Wakatipu among dramatic alpine ranges; it's rumoured that gold prospectors - captivated by the majestic beauty of the surrounding mountains and rivers - gave this now cosmopolitan town its name.
Queenstown is the home of the ultimate adventure bucket list and attracting backpackers all year round. A location to face your fears - Bungy Jumping, Skydiving, White Water Rafting, Canyon Swinging, Canyoning, Zip-trekking - the list goes on!
However, Bobbi, Sam and I decided against all of the above! Queenstown for us was a place to meet up with others we had met on our New Zealand tour as this was going to be the last place we would be together as a group before we head off in different directions.
We had planned on staying in Queenstown for four nights before we joined the bottom bus to explore the southern tip of New Zealand. In these four days we spent far too much money, drank and ate our body weight and had a lot of fun!
Whilst in Queenstown we had to try the legendary Ferg Burger. If you haven't heard of a Ferg Burger then it is pretty much a rite of passage for anyone heading to Queenstown, and many claim that they'd swim back to New Zealand for a bite of the burgery goodness. The queue was often seen with 50 plus people lining up down the street. In my opinion it was great but it had a close rival in the town - Devil Burger.
Sam raved about Mr Ferg's mince and cheese pie so much both Bobbi and I had to try one to shut him up!! We both agreed it was the best pie we had tasted so on one day our diet consisted of Ferg's bakery for breakfast, Mrs Ferg's ice cream for lunch and a Ferg burger for dinner!
Another favourite in Queenstown was Fat Badgers Pizza, and the clue was definitely in the name. The pizzas were 20 inches in diameter so we shared one between the three of us. Sam thought he could conquer it and ordered one for himself and struggled to even eat half! Between three it was the right amount with a slice left over.
In addition to Fat Badgers and the Ferg, monster cookie had happy hour at 6pm where you could get two delicious hot cookies for the price of one! (Note: this was not all consumed in the same day!!)
The following day Bobbi, Jess and I felt guilty and decided to hike up to the top of Queenstown 'hill' instead of taking the gondola ride to the top. Whoever told us this would take 45 minutes was lying! We made it to the top in 75 minutes and this was the day I regretted not wearing my walking boots, it was a very steep track to the top! When we made it the view was definitely worth it.
Later that afternoon 11 of us played adventure mini golf, we split into two teams and the holes were very creative ranging from castles to ski lifts and finishing off with a sweet factory. It was tense and came down to the last couple of holes. Dad had taught me well and I was the champion... Not that I am at all competitive ;)
From there we had our final supper together and said our good byes before we headed off in the morning.
