We left Koh Tao on the overnight ferry glad to have a bed for the night, but we soon realised that the boat didn't have beds, more of one communal mattress with a small slice not big enough for my shoulders dedicated to each passenger. It was a cozy ride to the mainland! We then had a 15 hour bus journey to KL which eventually turned out to be 22 hours with numerous changes onto equally crap minivans and buses along the way. At one point we were stuck at a bus terminal for 3 hours but managed to find some onward travel as the company we booked with didn't have a clue what they were doing. We finally arrived at 4am to find the room we had booked had been given away and so we moved into our first dorm room of the trip.
We grabbed some food in the morning and while sweating it all off, we devised a plan for our day. We set off on the monorail which was a great start and headed for the old railway with its islamic architecture. However, we soon realised that KL isn't made for pedestrians. We could see the railway station but between us and it stood a canal, a highway and a railway line, all of which appeared impossible to cross. 45mins later we had made it but it was pretty unimpressive and you had to stand in the central reservation of the dual carriage way to get a view of it! We decided to continue with the plan and head to the national mosque which was closed to non-muslim tourists. Not to worry we thought, we continued on to the main square which we had heard a lot about, but it turned out to be nothing more than a disused cricket pitch! Still undetered we headed for the national museum for a glorious insight into Malaysian history, but this was also closed...permanently. Excellent! It started to rain a monsoon on us so we resigned to a nearby cafe after a pitiful morning. The afternoon saw us wandering the greener side of KL which was quite cool and we sat in a cafe in the bird park as toucans and exotic birds landed on our table awaiting food. The more impatient ones just took it. We grabbed some dinner in little India which wasn't too shabby before heading back exhausted after our day of trekking!
The following morning to find 3 blood filled bed bugs roaming across our beds, content after a wonderful midnight feast. After squishing them and spraying blood across the bed, we decided it was time for a change of rooms! So far I haven't discovered any bite marks but apparently you can carry them with you, so lets hope they aren't lurking at the bottom of my rucksack waiting to attack. We booked our ticket for the Petronas Twin Towers tour at 6.30pm and took a trip to the even taller sky tower (4th tallest in the world at 224m high) with panoramic views of the city which were awesome. We then spent some time at the planetarium and it was in the black hole exhibition that I bumped into an old school mate of mine, Ollie Wolfe. It took me a while to realise who it was, not having seen him for 5 years and it was so unbelievably wierd that we would see eachother halfway around the globe, in a planetarium! Very very strange. Kat and I got some chinese in China town and sorted out some formalities before going up to the skytower of the Petronas Towers. It was quite strange standing on something, knowing there was nothing but a 200m drop below us! But the views were great and the building was very impressive. After a romantic last dinner consisting of fast food in a busy shopping mall, we managed to see the new Indiana Jones before heading back to our bed bug infested hostel.
The following morning I said farewell to Kat and Nush as they got in a taxi for the bus station. Was a difficult and sad goodbye after 2 months of travel together and it felt really wierd to be left standing there on my own. I felt pretty bad after saying goodbye but have been ok for the last few days. Think saying goodbye is probably just the hardest part. That evening I caught a flight to Brunei and started my new travels alone for the next 3 and a half months.
Love G
