The next thing I know, is the lights in the cabin are on, and a breakfast has been left on the spare tray table for me. It was ok - continental breakfast, with yoghurt and fruit juice. (All I really wanted was water, I think I had been asleep with my mouth open, because it was so dry! Which also means I was properly snoring) Had about an hour left, and I found an idiot abroad on the in flight entertainment It was cracking me up, it's one I haven't seen. I could see from the window across from me that the sun was starting to come up. You could see the black land, and the reds, yellows, and light blues from the sun rise. The landing was pretty smooth and as I was at the back, it look a little while to get off the jumbo.
The next bit I wasn't really looking forward to. Clearing immigration. I've seen all these Australian shows with the border agencies etc etc... I just thought knowing my luck i'm going to have problems. (I wasn't wrong) I handed my passport to the girl at immigration to be told that my tourist visa didn't have my middle name on it (This was booked by my travel agent.. Naughty Hannah!). She just said "that's fine, I can add it" then I see her press a button on the desk.. (Oh crap!) A guy comes over and takes my passport and asks me to follow. We just walked the other side of the desk. Stood up, very casual he asks if I was travelling alone? where I had been before arriving in Australia? what I'm doing? have I been to Australia before? Of course I answered everything he wanted. He wrote something on my immigration card handed my passport back and on my immigration card he put G10. I had a feeling this wasn't the end... I collected my rucksack and walked towards the customs. Handed over my documents, and was asked to take a seat. "We have a Golf-10" talking into his radio... The same guy from the immergation desk came back over to me. X-rays both my bags, and took me over to a table to do a search. He first searched my day bag, taking a swob and getting it tested for drunks and stuff. Then a swob of inside my rucksack my washbag I think. Saying the machine will pick up ANY drunks... I was like "Yeah, that's fine.!" both came back fine of course! He then put everything back, and said, "Thanks Gareth, have a great time in Australia, the exit is on the right!".
The only thing left out was the strip search!
Checked in to my second flight, and had to transfer to the domestic terminal. One good thing is I won't have to do that all over again. Honestly they should bring the same immergation and customs restrictions to the UK! I checked my flight time, and I had 3 hours to kill. I'd finished my book (now wish I had paid £12 for the last hunger games). I found my gate and tried to sleep. It didn't really work. But think I managed to get 20 minutes. The flight was again on time, this time getting a window, and the middle seat was empty. I sleepy the full 2 hour flight. I don't think I was even awak for the take off. If they did a snack or drink service I missed out! Arriving into Cairns it looked the same! I got a transfer ticket and waited a little while before leaving. My hostel is cool Koala Beach Resort, and it's looked just two blocks away from the beach! It seems nice, the guys on reception are really helpful. One thing I have noticed is, I've been in Australia now about 7 hours and it's really expensive!! But I'm here 6 week I need to make the most of it. I got my Great Barrier Reef tour booked for tomorrow. Took a walk around the beach, seeing what other places I remember. The Pier, the Marina. I sat and had some lunch looking out over the water. I was told its about 26c but it felt cold to me, walking around in a vest and shorts. Then as I'm eating I see someone walk past with a doggy food box, The Rattle and Hum!! I am 100% going back there to check the toilets haven't changes, plus the food was really good. (The toilets had 1 way mirrored glass!) if you had seen it, you would know!
Looked around all the travel agents to see what exactly I wanted to do while here. I'm still wanting to sky dive, but looking at the leaflets I'm starting to think again. If I'm going to do it, this is the best place. Went back to the hostel to chill, and chatted with one of the guys from my dorm, he's from Denmark! Popped over to woolworths, to get some supplies. Everyone seems to make and cook their own food every day..!? I guess it makes it cheaper.
I repaird my day bag, as it split down the side, check me out using a needle and thread. It's not very good, but it's not going to come undone any time soon. I have to be at the Reef Terminal early tomorrow to leave for my day on the Great Barrier Reef or to us travellers GBR!!
