Arriving to La Paz at 3.00am after no sleep wasn't the best thing. Going through immigration and customs was easy enough and finding an ATM was okay. Then came the nerve racking part - getting a taxi. We asked an airline worker who said to get one of the radio taxis with airport on it. So we jumped in and started driving down dark streets, rails on windows and speed humps everywhere. I thought we were going to get mugged or kidnapped. After 5 minutes we could see the city below and the driver pointed and said La Paz city. We then wound our way down small streets to our hotel, which looked closed. At this moment I wasn't sure what to do. Our driver then got out and rang a button behind the grates in the door and someone came to open it... relief! I gave a driver a nice tip and we quickly got our room key and decided to take the stairs 5 levels up... altitude, tiredness and we didn't even use the lift!
That night sleeping was hard, having a cold and adjusting to the altitude.
After waking up at 11, we decided to go explore the local town. We walked through the witches market and stalls with llama jumpers and all kinds of colourful clothing and items. We then found a small cafe for lunch and quickly realised Bolivia is cheap. I had a local cocoa tea (to help with altitude sickness), a smoothie and a main meal for less than $20 aus! After this we walked to San Pedro square and joined the red cap walking tour.
The tour begun at the jail, where 2400 people live including wives and children's. It's like a mini city with a restaurant and rooms, whatever money can pay for. Rumour has it the purest cocaine is within those walls and apparently they throw diapers over the wall filled with drugs. We also learnt about the prison tours which use to occur but no longer do and the book one English man wrote about his experience.
After this we walked through the local produce market and the witches market, learning about the various love potions and rituals -including burying people alive (yikes). We then went to the food market where I got an avocado, cheese, tomato and onion sandwich for $1aus and a banana and strawberry smoothie for $2 aus!
After this we walked to the main square where he government building is and a building with a backwards clock- how random. We learnt about the many Bolivian presidents and the current one. We learnt about if people aren't happy they protest.
After this we headed back to the hotel and grabbed dinner at the pub down the road. Exhausted after a long day of walking at altitude!
