We had another long day in the truck to Maceio, just under 12hrs and it felt like about 100. Brazil is very green and we have passed lots of lush vegetation. Maceio is a rather decent size city but we are out of the city a little ways and camping just across from the beach. We reached camp about 7pm and put our tents up in the dark, having to be careful with placement as lots of palm trees here with coconuts that can cause quite a bit of damage if one was to fall on you. Had a late dinner due to our late arrival and then sat around chatting to about midnight with a few others.
Yesterday, after cooking eggs for everyone (cooking duty), about 12 of us headed to one of the beaches where we were able to get some traditional sailing boats called jangadas to take us out about 1km or so to where there is a reef. We spent 3hrs out here swimming and snorkelling (although most of the reef was dead and really only saw 1 type of fish). If we wanted something to drink, our boat captain would yell out our order to another boat and the swimming waiters would bring us drinks over. We were thinking about eating so they bought a tray over of the seafood on offer and you chose what you wanted and they went back to the boat, freshly cooked it and then bought it back. Emma and I shared something that was similar to a crayfish or lobster and it was cooked perfectly with just some oil and salt and was lovely. What a fantastic morning, different then just spending it on the beach.
After using the internet, headed back to camp and I started on dinner. Wanted to do crepes for desert and wanted to precook them so all we had to do later was heat them very quickly. We also cooked prawns in garlic and tomato for entree, beef stirfry and egg fried rice for main and then crepes. Everyone was stuffed by the end. What a mammoth effort cooking all that but I really enjoy cooking and it is one of the things I have missed doing while travelling. A cold shower after was much appreciated (lucky, because there was no hot water).
Most people went to the pub but I was too stuffed. Nikki, Mark and I decided to turn the fly around on a couple of the tents. We heard them come back and burst out in laughter. They are still trying to figure out who did it and have put the blame on a few others so far. Adrian thinks it was 'bloody brilliant'. Guess he wishes he had thought to do it to someone else first. Guess we will tell them on our last day of the trip so no retribution can happen.
