We left Pucon, ready for a long drive thru some beautiful scenery but also a border crossing back into Argentina. We had been warned that the officials at this particular crossing could be difficult and they were right. After waiting in the truck for about 40 mins while Ross and Euan had discussions with them we were finally allowed into the office but only in the order of the passenger list they had been supplied with. Someone was obviously bored....
Finally allowed through and after a quick lunch stop we made our way to Bariloche, the biggest town in Argentina in the lakes district. Passed some beautiful scenery on the way, lots of lakes and snow topped mountains. Arrived just after 6.30pm at our campsite and quickly put up the tent before reporting for cooking duty. We put together a spaghetti bolognese for everyone that seemed to go down well.
Yesterday I went with some others to hire a bike and ride around what is known as the 'Circuito Chico'. It was mainly on the road but it circuits around some beautiful lakes and scenery. Katie and I did walk up some hills, rather than ride but good exercise for different muscles. Stopped and walked up a hill to a small chapel that had a beautiful view of the fanciest resort here in Argentina, Hotel Llao Llao. There was a man with his St Bernard dog taking money for having your photo taken with the dog and with the hotel in the background. Didn't pay him, but managed to sneak a photo of the dog anyway.
We stopped and had a walk to one of the lakes and then rode to a small historic town called Colonia Suiza (Swiss). A few chocolate and icecream shops here and icecream was calling our names. It was good. Back on the bikes and about 1.5kms out, we realised we had taken the wrong road so had to backtrack but all good. Made it back to return our bikes and then tried to get a bus back to the campsite. None would stop because they were all full. So we started walking. Walked about 3kms before finally getting a bus for the last 2kms, so that icecream was definitely worked off my bum.
Got windy last night and has been rather cold the last couple of nights. Today I went into town and just wandered around. It definitely has a feel of Switzerland to it, with so many chocolate shops and St Bernard dogs around. I was very good and did not buy any chocolate. Did have a hot chocolate though with some chocolate mousse cake. Only live once.
So back to camp and we had a yummy chilli for dinner. I have splurged and paid to have a bed in the dorm tonight. Just under 5 dollars which is nothing for a comfortable bed, no wind, no dust and not having to worry about packing up all my sleeping gear early tomorrow morning for our 7am start.
