This hike is different than my prior hikes as there are no trails, you just start walking and follow your nose. Or, in my case, Big Nose. Are you calling me Big Nose?
My goal was to hike a ring of peaks to the north of Vestmanna. My hosts, Durita and Frodi, recommended this area as beautiful. They were entirely right.
It's not on the official lists of 'the best places to hike' in the Faroes. It's what local Faroese do....just start walking. At the top of one peak I met several sheep ranchers herding their wooly beasts down the mountain. I kept my distance to not spook the sheep, and was able to visit with them for a few minutes. They said it was ok to continue to the top. Durita tells me there are sometimes some concerns from farmers with hikers. She said if you are courteous it will usually be OK, which seems to be the case.
