We're now in Vietnam and have spent the last week in Saigon and the Mekong Delta. The latter is an amazingly fertile area south of Saigon, criss-crossed with waterways and apparently produces 75% of the country's fruit and veg. We managed to find a great 3-day tour of the area; just the two of us and our guide, Thang. We travelled on local buses, in sampans on the river and by bicycle as we explored the floating markets and local industries. We cooked, ate and stayed with local families who were incredibly friendly and generous. We even managed to do some shopping on the market for meat & veggies for our lunch using our very limited vietnamese. This tour was definitely another trip highlight.
Saigon was crazy with motorbikes which have replaced the forests of bicycles that were on the street when Andy last visited 14 years ago. It was hot work walking around the sites, but having an air-con hotel room to return to with cable TV to watch Wimbledon helped. Unfortunately the only Andy Murray match we managed to stay up for was the semi-final, as prior to this he was always third on court so his matches weren't starting until 11pm or midnight.
Yesterday we sat on a bus for almost 8 hours in order to travel into the central highlands and are now in the town of Dalat. We're planning to do some cycling and possibly a bit of motorcycle touring.
