I arrive at the departure point, feeling quite nervous as I was told that most people on the trip are 35-40, so was worried that I wouldnt have anyone to talk too.
This part of the trip was a three night (FREE) trip I got with booking the 45 day trip.
We climbed up the five runged ladder into the 10tonne truck which is so high up- the views are amzing all the way. The truck was mainly full of Aussies but there were three brits all in their 20s- which I was pleased about. The truck however, was in very bad condition. It leaked through the windows and the roof so we were told to pray for no rain. The tour leader Paul did however day that the "chance of rain is highly unlikely" HE WAS WRONG!!!
We set off towards the Masi Mara (about a 10 hour straight drive) At about 1pm the heavens opened and because we were in the middle of no where, the ground was just rocks and clay. So you can imagine what started to happen: We started to get stuck, very stuck. The driver and cook slipped some bricks and plastic under the wheels which after much effort managed to break the banks of a nearby stream- FLOODING US!!
By now its about 7pm and we hadnt eaten since breakfast and its getting dark- we are all soaked because the truck had leaked badly. The lights had been turned off to save battery power so were sitting in the dark, wet, cold and hungry. It did however work well as a group bonding activity!!
Unfortuntaly at about 1am (Yes, 1am) someone mentioned they needed the toilet so we all decided to go! Hadnt realised how deep the mud was and was basically up to my knees! We started walking to find a private spot away from the local villagers who had gathered to help (but were really doing nothing at all) and then we spotted them (not quite sure what 'them' are) but there were hundreds of yellow eyes surrounding us. Our tour leader told us to not stray from the truck- we were however told that yellow eyes are 'safe', whatever that means!!
At about 2am two jeeps came to pull us out: no luck! They tried to attach a metre long piece of rope from the jeep to the 10 tonne truck. I still do not understand why they thought it would work. The jeeps eventually gave up and decided to take us to the campsite and abondon the truck with all our belongings in it. Was taken on a wild drive where we thought we were about to die at any minute as the jeep tipped from side to side and because there were no sides to this jeep we had to hold onto a pole in the middle. At one point we tipped so much that my hair touched the mud on the ground: SCARY STUFF!!
Eventually arrived at the Masi Mara campsite and we greeted by masi warriors who handed us all blankets and so went to bed. Long but fun day!!
