We make ourselves breakfast in the Airbnb kitchen, before heading to outer north Adelaide to find the recommended laundrette to do our laundry. I'm still deeply unimpressed at Brad's miselling in his Airbnb details. Which we relied on, to our detriment. Just for the (legal) record.
The owner of the laundrette is there when we arrive, and he's really friendly - eager to please and help if needed. He even gives us a dollar when it turns out we're one short. We leave the washing going and retreat back down the street for coffee. Laundry done, we get the free city bus back to the airbnb for CLT (cheese lettuce tomato) lunch, tea and cards in the air conditioning.
Finally we feel cooled enough to brave the Adelaide afternoon sun. We walk into town, stopping briefly at Light's Vision, with a statue of the first surveyor-general of Adelaide, Colonel William Light, pointing towards the town centre. Light reportedly stood here as he marked out the town plan for Adelaide. Onwards past St Peters (closed) and the Oval (closed). Into the university, we find the music block (hooray!) and could even hear someone playing the piano in a practice room inside.
We return to the State Library and browse their exhibition on pop-up books. There's another pianist playing the free piano here. He looks like a street sleeper, and we wonder what his story is. On our way out, we spot a postbox, and finally send the postcards to our wonderful parents (whom we love and miss very much, it goes without saying) that we bought a few weeks earlier!
Getting peckish, we stroll towards Peel Street, a pedestrian alleyway known for cool bars.
There's a quick detour to the Catholic, St Francis Xavier Cathedral just off Victoria Square. This church was mentioned by Andy, our Adelaide Greeter, because its tower is a recent addition, paid for by a rich Catholic family. He wasn't a fan of this, or Catholics in general.
Back to Peel Street, we grab a table and cocktails in Clever Little Tailor; a small, quirky bar with a good playlist. Next was Chihuahua, an odd Mexican themed cocktail bar just across the street. Here we accidentally happen on some jazz - Foxy is pleased :) It's a surprising place for a gig, but that's what Adelaide is all about nowadays.
Post-jazz, we get the bus back to O'Connell's Bakery - a North Adelaide institution - for late night pie dinner. As we see someone else's dinner though, we realise we forgot to order the pie floater we'd read about, and resolve to come back for it another time.
