Test Run
After the wedding we spent 4 days exploring with Sarah & Chris. Visited Fota Island where Chris had played golf on our way to see Cobh which was the last port of call of the Titanic on it's fateful journey. This pretty coastal town is full of history as it was also the departure point of the first immigrants to New York via Ellis Island. Climbed up the hills to St Colmans Cathedral for a birds eye view of the port. Also had a couple of hours in Paul Street Cork. Geoff suffered a gastro upset so we left Sarah & Chris to visit Blarney Castle while we headed off to the Ring of Kerry with me driving the tiny narrow, winding roads. We stopped along the way for photos of the wild water, sheep & cattle on the rocky shoreline, an ice cream in Sneem & stayed overnight at a bnb in Cahersiveen. Next morning G much improved so we explored the gorgeous ruins of Ballycarbery Castle & an ancient ring fort nearby. More driving through tiny roads & pretty towns took us to the car ferry across the Shannon River heading for Doonbeg for a look at the enormous expanse of Trump International Golf Course - a wild & windy links course right on the sand dunes & the sea. Chris couldn't resist the challenge & booked to play 18 holes the next day! We continued past another famous links golf course at Lahinch to the wonderful Atlantic View House for the night where both our rooms had a view across the grass to the Cliffs of Moher & the wild Atlantic Ocean. There was a strong wind blowing & it certainly was a wild Atlantic we went down to the coast to see & admire the huge waves breaking right up to the top of the smaller cliffs. For our last morning together we went to see the Cliffs of Moher up close & walk along the cliff top path. Being a fine sunny day in August there were hundreds of people there but it never felt too crowded & the cliffs are so huge & powerful that they put on a wonderful show for us. We said goodbye to S & C and drove to Dublin detouring across some of the Burren to see the fantastic limestone landscape there. It is quite stunning & I'd love to have had more time to go walking & explore the region ..... Oh well...... Next time? We had a lovely time traveling with Sarah & Chris & are so grateful for the opportunity to have fun with our adult children - lots of laughs, teasing & love.
