Test Run
Last day in Paris & the end of our European sojourn - at least for a while! Today we did a few less touristy things for a completely different view of Paris. First stop was the very interesting Pere Lachaise Cemetery where many famous people are buried. The place itself is huge & has blocks of memorials divide by lovely cobbled, tree lined paths. It was very peaceful in the morning without many people about so we bought a map & wandered around to locate a few of the names we were interested in. In no particular order we saw : Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Frederic Chopin, Jim Morrison, Gertrude Stein, Moliere & some very emotive memorials for the victims of the German Concentration camps during WWII. They varied enormously from simple & traditional to modern & ornate. Chopin has a weeping muse of music on top & Jim Morrison's is simple but the tree trunk nearby is covered in globs of chewing gum!? Such an interesting place full of such creative talent. Next unusual place was a walk along the Promenade Plantee - a lovely green space of 4.7km that was formerly a raised railway line. I discovered this when Geoff ran in the Green Corridor run in Singapore & the running singlet featured a list - Green Corridor in Singapore, Promenade Plantee in Paris & Highline in New York. They are all green spaces created on obsolete railway lines & it seemed like a fun thing to find & do. It was delightful to walk high above the roads among plants, ponds & trees with views of the houses nearby & places to sit if required. We did actually behave like the tourists we were & walked down the Isle St Louis, had a gelato, went past Notre Dame where the queue stretched as far as we could see & visited the beautiful Sainte Chapelle. Unfortunately it is currently under renovation so couldn't see the rose window but the remaining stained glass is spectacular & was lovely with late afternoon sun coming through to decorate the floor. We also went to Galleries Lafayette but only for the view of the dome & the view from the roof. At the very top is a green terrace with red plastic lounges & a great view over the Opera & rooftops. Serious shoppers were having a rest here - some even asleep on the fake turf! Merci Paris for showing us a great time - as Piaf sang - Je ne regrette rien!
