La belle France lived up to it's reputation for us with a stay in St Malo & Le Mont St Michel. Had an uneventful ferry trip from Guernsey to St Malo where we stayed Intra Muros - within the walls of the old city. Dined on the regional specialties of gallettes - savoury pancakes one night & seafood on the second. The Cancale oysters were enormous & delicious & took me straight back to my childhood holidays in Harrington - yum! We walked around the old walls & watched the sun set into the sea - always a treat for someone from the east coast! Also explored the city with it's cobbled streets, grey stone buildings, many souvenir shops, restaurants & seagulls swooping overhead. Picked up our hire car & drove south to see the beautiful medieval city of Dinan where we climbed the clock tower for a view over the rooftops. Did a souvenir shop for a traditional Breton striped jersey - red & white of course, then had a Roquefort filled gallette for lunch sitting at a table on a narrow cobbled street - tres francais! Then through the rural countryside to Ardevon & our breathtaking first view of Le Mont St Michel across the cornfields. Spent the late afternoon & evening on the Mont walking with crowds up the steep slope & many stairs to tour the Abbey at the top. Built of layers upon the rock itself then many more layers through the centuries this ancient place is quite a labyrinth of stone rooms, church & lovely cloisters. The area around is still mud flats at low tide but a new bridge will be complete soon to return the island to it's more original form, surrounded by the sea, not a causeway. The low tide is still beautiful & the seagulls soar & float around the peak as we've seen everywhere beside the sea. Dinner with this view & a sunset over the Mont was a perfect end to the day.
