Wow what a breathtakingly awesome day! We got up and breakfasted and then headed straight out. As we came to our 'bear bridge' we saw another bear but this time a cinnamon black bear not a normal black bear. We then continued on our journey only to see a fox by the side of the road so we stopped to admire this for a while before continuing on further.
When we reached Yellowstone River we stopped and saw marmot and Harlequin ducks (spotted by Don) and we managed to cause a duck jam!
After creating a duck jam, we went back to Slough Creek where we were yesterday to revisit the wolf and pups. As we were waiting to see if they were going to come out we saw quite a number of different birds including the osprey and prairie falcon. After a short wait the adult wolf came in with something that looked like a bone and so the pups came out of the den and follow her down behind the hill. A little while later they resurfaced and walked on into the woods.
As all the excitement was over we decided to drive on to Silver Gate Montana. On the way we stopped to look at the bison and some other animals. When we got to Silver Gate (just outside Yellowstone national park) we were treated to a hot chocolate at the Log Cabin Cafe which was filled with animal memorabilia and looked around the gift shop. From here we continued on through Cooke City which is apparently the coolest small town in America up to the West Summit to see the summit of Beartooth. As we made our descent we were suddenly pushed into a winter wonderland, with snow everywhere and I mean everywhere. I don't think I have ever seen this much snow. At points the snow was deeper than the van at the side of the road. So we stopped for lunch by a icy lake and then continued to make our way up to the summit and into the cloud, stopping along the way to admire the view and play in the snow. I made a snow angel and some snowballs and Darren made a very realistic snow pika!
We eventually made our way to the top, spotting a number of marmots in the snow along the way (there were some pika too but I missed them). One of the marmots was sitting looking up from the side of the road looking like he was looking over a wall - it was so very cute! When we got to the top we couldn't see the bears tooth so we continued a little further and the cloud cleared and we were able to see it. We also saw 2 new birds which we hadn't seen before.
After playing in our winter wonderland we retraced our steps back towards Mammoth with some top spots on the way. Firstly we saw a moose, this time standing up and in full view until the car behind us decided to reverse and spooked the moose making him cross the road in front of us and end up walking further into the woods.
After seeing the moose we stopped to watch the bison herds (the biggest we had seen yet) and then as we carried on further Di spotted a black bear walking through the woods so we stopped and watched that and then later on I spotted a coyote running along the river.
When we finally made it back to the cabins I do a spot of shopping before we headed out to dinner and then I came back to pack ready for our departure to Old Faithful tomorrow.
All in all another top day!
