My Big Adventure
So today we headed out after a little lay in to see the biggest church in Iceland. The Hallsgrimskirkja. And although it was closed you could still look inside. It was very stark and minimalistic a complete contrast to the churches of Italy we visited last summer. From here we headed down to the Trojnin (that pond) and the first park of Iceland. Where we saw lots of swans, eider duck and gulls. The weather was hideous heavy rain and cutting cold wind but in true English spirit we didn't let this put us down and we mustered on through the wind and the rain to further explore Reykjavik and the gift shops it had to offer! Did I mention how expensive Iceland is?! After exploring a number of the souvenir shops, passing the City Hall and parliamentary buildings and exploring the harbour region further we went for a fish and chip lunch where we had the catch of the day - pollock with crispy potatoes AKA roast potatoes to you and me!! Having said this it was very yummy! Maybe we've stumbled across a new English take-away - fish and roast potatoes - hmmm maybe not! After lunch we headed back to the Harpa and along the Laugavegur towards our hotel hunting out more souvenir shops along the way. We then spent some time in the hotel drying off before heading out to get our coach to the blue lagoon. A massive coach for 7 people! When we arrived at the blue lagoon we got ready and headed out into the cold and then into the beautifully warm water. It was a milky blue and you could instantly taste the salt and minerals! Well you could if you were me and you opened your mouth as you went into the water - when will I learn! The temperature of the water varied greatly from one area to the next as did the depth but with my newly found water confidence this didn't faze me one bit. We explored the lagoon and took advantage of the mud face mask. The lagoon was almost mystical as the wind steam and mist all merged together you could literally see the area right in front of you. After a while and after having a long hot bath with a bunch of strangers we headed back out into the cold to get ourselves ready for our journey back to the hotel. We popped to the cafe for a drink and then took the bus back to Reykjavik. As we looked out of the window we saw breaks in the clouds and some ringed of red in the sky so maybe a possible sighting of the notorious northern lights?! Who knows! After being dropped off we headed back to the hotel via the shop to pick up a picnic tea and then back to the hotel for said tea and a chill before bed. Ready for a day of hopefully whale watching tomorrow!
