My Big Adventure
So day 2 in Iceland began with another early start in preparation for our trip to the Golden Circle. We set off just after breakfast (which was a little random as I ended up with lemon tea and a dodgy danish but the rest of it was yummy!) and headed straight to the geysers. The journey was just under 2 hours but the scenery was totally amazing as we travelled over and through lava fields and were surrounded by snow capped mountains and geothermal steam shoots appearing along the journey. When we arrived at the geysers we admired the field of small geysers and how the water was bubbling not quite appreciating what was to come if we walked 10 metres along. As we walked up to the larger geyser it suddenly shot up 5 or 6 metres in front of us - a truly amazing sight! So we then waited on bated breath for hen next few minutes with our cameras at the ready to get a suitable shot! It was a pretty impressive sight seeing the geyser bubbling, temporarily suck the down to then shoot it up into the air and then watch it fill back up again ready for the process to start again. After watching this another couple of times we then headed up to the other geysers which tended to just steam and one smelt pretty rotten too. So on our way back to the coach we stopped again to watch the Stokkur geyser once more and I like to think it did a double shoot just for us! From the geysers we headed to Gulfoss falls for a traditional Icelandic lamb soup lunch with a yummy chocolate cake to finish. And then we went and explored the falls which again were amazing. We walked around the falls to experience it from all different angles and took in the surrounding panoramic views of the snowy mountains. From Gulfoss we headed on to Thingvellier National Park which is steeped in Icelandic history. I'd like to say a little more about this but kind of tuned out and forgot to listen to everything our guide was saying!! The journey to Thingvellier once again had spectacular views which lots of geothermal steam shoots along the way. The difference with this journey was that we were driving through the Rift Valley of the Eurasian and American tectonic plates. We stopped off at the visitor centre where we were able to take in the views of the snowy mountains again and look at the lakes and steams that were running through the valley and walk between the steep rocks. Also while at the centre I forked out 200 kroner (approx. £1.50) for a trip to the toilet. This is not something that I would usually mention but felt that at that price it was worth it. From the national park we headed back to the hotel in preparation for dinner and then a slightly earlier night in preparation for another day of sight seeing and a trip to the blue lagoon tomorrow!
