So I got up and breakfasted and checked out of our hotel. We then jumped in the van and started our journey to Valdez. Our first stop was Kenai Mountains National Heritage Area to take photos of the amazing view (a little bit like Mount Robson with the flowers in front). From here we continued our journey to the Turnagain pass where we stopped to admire the view but also used the restroom which were the most minging disgusting facilities so far on my trip! Yuck is not even the word!
After our loo stop we ventured on with a brief stop at the Salmon lookout in Chugach National Forest to see if the salmon had come in yet - they hadn't but the view was once again beautiful and we had the view of another glistening Glacier (the blue skies and sun make everything look so much more impressive). We then drove on to the Portage Glacier where we took photos of the lake and Glacier while Miles checked us in for tunnel.
The tunnel to Whittier is a single lane train tunnel which is open for half an hour at a time for the traffic to go through. So we paid our toll and waited for our turn to go through the tunnel. The tunnel was literally just wide and tall enough for a train and was 2 and a half miles long. It was quite interesting driving through the train tunnel as you don't usually get to see inside the tunnel while you're on the train. I did find the fallen rocks on the side of the tunnel and the water dripping on the windscreen a little unnerving but we made it through the tunnel and arrived in Whittier ready to check in for our ferry. So we checked in and then had an hour or so to explore the 'city'. Whittier is in fact a small 'city' so small in fact that all the residents of the town live in one building, a tower block which I found a little hard to get my head round.
So after exploring the town we boarded our ferry ready for our 8 and a half hour journey to Valdez.
The journey was long and we entertained ourselves by reading, eating, chatting, watching films and looking for wildlife.
We were really lucky and got to see a pod of orcas and one orca was really quite close to the boat so I got a really good view from the deck. As well as this we also saw some dall's porpoise (which look similar to an orca and a couple of sea otters).
We finally got in to Valdez at 9.30pm after eating some dinner on the boat (I burnt my lip on the cheese of the pizza - not good!) and then made our way to our hotel, which thankfully was only a couple of minutes away from the port, and we checked in and settled in for the night ready for a day's adventure in Valdez tomorrow.
