We decide to brave the chicken buses again. Nowhere near as packed this time but still pretty eventful. The route to 'Del Lago' (the lake) involves half a dozen or so different buses, a few tuktuks, a pick up truck and a couple of boats. I was pretty shocked when on one of the chicken buses a man jumps on with a netted bag full of puppies and couldn't help but scream out when, at one particularly bumpy turn, a sack of potatoes fell on them. A friend jokingly accused me of creating a 'white girl scene' which I suppose was fair enough!
We checked into a quirky little hostel called 'Mr Mullets'. The rooms are cheap and clean, friendly staff and a decent bar. What's more, should you opt to style your hair into a mullet for the duration of your stay you're rewarded with a free night of accommodation, free tequila and best of all a place on the 'Mr Mullets Wall of Fame'.
Within minutes of arriving we're informed it's steak night at Clover's, the Irish pub down the road. Although very un-Guate, I have been craving both steak and a pub and the prospect is too exciting to turn down. Clovers is packed and to my delight also has live music from a local Orlando Bloom lookalike whose faithful Labrador lies by his feet for his entire set. Accidentally catching his eye I even get a cheeky wink.
Next morning equals breakfast overlooking the lake of fruit, yogurt, granola and strong black cafe negro.
Though I've never really taken a liking to straight black before it looks like my lattes are being replaced.
