After stopping back in Phnom Pehn for a night we took the 7 hour journey to Siem Reap. As soon as we got off the bus we were mobbed by touts all trying to get us to go to their guesthouses. There must have been about 20 of them and they needed a good shouting at to get them to back off. We actually ended up staying in a really nice guesthouse. We managed to get the room down from $10 to $5. The main attraction in Siem Reap is the Angkor Temples. We arranged our trip to Angkor to see them the following day. The next morning at 5am we were picked up by our tuk tuk driver Lin and taken to Angkor Wat to see sunrise. It was pitch black as we arrived but it wasn't long before the sun began to come up. It looked really spectacular with Angkor Wat as the backdrop. Part of the sky went a pinky red colour while some clouds made uit look quite eery. The good thing about being at Angkor Wat that early is we got to explore it before the big crowds came in. It really is an amazing building, so old but still so beautiful. We went on to see all the other main temples. They were each so unique and interesting in their own way. Bayon is the temple with all the faces carved into it. That is my favourite. I liked all the different faces. We also saw the tree temple. THis one had trees growing off the top of the temple. It was incredible. All the routes stretched down round the temple to the ground. How some of the trees stayed balanced I'll never know. This is the temple that featured in Tomb Raider. They are all massive Angelina Jolie fans here! We saw many more temples. A lot of climbing was involved as some of them were pretty steep so it was a good workout. Halfway through the day the heavens opened and it began to rain. We were not prepared for this. Luckilly our lovely driver Lin ran out and got us some really sexy ponchos (bin liners). We had a great day at the temples. I can't believe how many of them there are.
The following day we allowed ourselves a lazy day. We were both in pain from all the clambering around.
I really like Siem Reap. It was a nice place. Where we stayed, near the old market, there were a few streets with lots of nice restaurants, bars and souvenir shops. There was also a really nice night market. Most night markets we've been to have sold really similar things, however, this one had lots of unique items and we spent quite some time browsing the stalls. I even picked myself up a nice Buddha painting. We both enjoyed Siem Reap. The temples were fascinating and the place itself was very pretty and good fun. It had some good bars too. In particular I recomend Angkor Wat? and the Temple Bar. From Cambodia we made our way as fast as we could to the Thai Islands which is where we are now sunning ourselves on the beaches. This is the life!
