FARFRUMWURKEN
We arrived at Vancouver airport at 1:00 p.m. PST and departed on-time at 4:00 p.m. Little did we know what we would feel like twenty-eight hours later. I want to thank Irene and Les for their assitance getting to the airport, we are truly thankful for the help. I just hope you be careful on that trip to Whistler in my little baby. In any event, we boarded our B787, a plane in Los Angeles, a great, new plane capable of a 560 mph cruising speed and one that can hold 252 passengers with a massive wing span of 199 feet. Despite the sleeping pills, inflatable neck brace, blanket and other apparatus, the quest for any kind of sleep on this beauty seemed to be out-of-reach.
Being the courteous gentlemen that I am, I chose the middle seat on the final LAX / SYDNEY leg, and wouldn't you know that it was the only seat in the whole plane without a video/tv terminal. After five reboots, and an awful lot of complaints from my end, we'll see just how the "friendly skies of United" are when I ask for some sort of compensation.
Travel to Australia is a daunting task even for those most prolific of travelers. I'm not quite sure how Keith Urban, Nichole Kidman and Russel Crowe do it on such a regular basis, I suspect that it's a private jet as opposed to the middle seat in economy. We're 1 1/2 hours from Sydney and we've traveled 6,938 miles from LAX with yet another 664 miles still to go.
After our $54.00 AUS cab ride from the airport we headed to our hotel for the night. Based on the fact that we had just the one night before boarding the ms Maasdam I opted for an "economy" hotel. When our cabbie pulled up to the Kirketon Hotel, apparently a boutique hotel in Kings Cross area just to the southeast of downtown, I kind of thought I should have opted for the Holiday Inn with our travel partners. We have a view of a magnificent aging "brick" wall and a pretty tiny bed for two. I've assured Deborah over and over that I've learned my lesson going forward.
We're off to dinner with the whole crew tonight. We're getting together with Jean, Renetta, Ian and Wendy so it'll be great to get re-acquainted. We board the ship tomorrow, but we're spending the night here in port so it'll give us another day to do some exploring the downtown core here is this magnificent city.

Ron and Maggie Leakey Our Australian friends have told us about the long hours on the plane and the jet lag afterwards; so we have decided to break up the flight by going to the Cook Islands before going on to Australia. Your blog has confirmed that we may have made a good decision.
Liz Bob, I know exactly how you feel. It can be pretty exhausting flying in a cramped space for so many hours. But rest assured, pretty soon, you'll be up and running and loving every site on your trip down under. Enjoy!
Terry Holgate Remember, if they throw you out of an Australian pub you will return
Les and Irene The flight is worth the adventure, enjoy and yes sleeping pills are the best we always use them on long flights.
