FARFRUMWURKEN
I can’t believe the weather we’ve been getting – it’s really been on our side – cold yes, but blue skies and no rain. I was up at 6:30 a.m. and dressed for the cold, windy Promenade Deck because of the five glaciers we’d be passing prior to our arrival in Ushuaia, Argentina. I dressed real warm and headed out – thank god for the hot chocolate that the ship was serving on the open deck. My pictures don’t do this justice.
Ushuaia is a docked port but we didn’t schedule any tours here so it was going to be another walkabout town. I kind of pictured Ushuaia as an "outback" town on the Antarctic frontier – wrong again. It’s a city with new stores; trendy clothes geared towards the younger market – Asado restaurants on just about every corner – even a large casino. Deborah has always clung to her southern heritage – but here in Ushuaia she can’t get any more Southern than this. It’s nestled in the mountains and is quite modern; it’s a starting point for a lot of the Antarctic expeditions such as National Geographic and the like. They come here to replenish their supplies and then head the 400+ miles to the first ice shelf and go south from there.
We found an Internet café on one of the side streets so it allowed me to update my blog with some reasonable speed to the wi-fi, albeit it took 25 minutes for me to upload just five (5) pictures. Guess I’ll have to wait until Buenos Aires or Rio for some real speed – hopefully. We’re out of here about 7:30 tonight and go around the HORN tomorrow. We’re kinda hoping that it’s rough – I think we’d enjoy the story more than just calm waters. We have only six days left here onboard ship – it’s gone by quick. The next port of call is Stanley in the Falkland Islands and then north to Montevideo in Uruguay. Alas, all good things must come to and end at some point.
Again, THANKS to all of you who have been reading this stuff, it really makes it all worthwhile.
