Today we had a free day in Rome. We were given a day pass for the trains, including the Metro. We went into town at about 9.30am. Bec took us as far as the colluseum. We lined up in the queues for a ticket to get inside. It was €12 for a ticket and an extra €4 for an audio guide. We didn't bother with the audio guide as have found them frustrating most of the time, but kind of wish that we had now as there wasn't much written information inside. The colluseum was a lot larger than what I had expected. From here we walked up a steep hill, past where the chariot races used to take place. Here the biggest sporting disaster in history took place when one of the stands collapsed, killing over 1100 people. Bec had took us about a key hole in a wooden door that sat at the top of the hill. We were told that if you looked through the key hole you could see St Peter's Basilica perfectly centered and framed by garden hedges on both sides. We chose to visit here as it was within walking distance of the colluseum and something a bit different from what most tourists see when in Rome. The photos don't do the key hole justice. It's been done extremely well and is quite artistic. After visiting the key hole we took the Metro to a small underground shopping centre and grabbed some lunch. Then met Bec and headed back to the camp ground. The cabins at the camp ground are really cute and although we had been warned about bed bugs here, we didn't experience any problems. We spent the rest of the afternoon in the swimming pool. The swimming pool opening hours never seem to be very long. The pool here is open between 12pm and 7pm. There is a bar at the pool and a life guard. He sits there with his yellow and red cards. There are no signs to say no diving or jumping, but you get a yellow card if you jump in. Few of the guys got them. Was pretty funny. Tonight we all bought a 'I love Roma' t-shirt and a marker. We cut them up for our whiteboard party. The idea was that everyone would write on everyone else's T-shirts throughout the night. There was an Italian guy selling homemade burgers from a stall outside so I got Paul to come back to the cabin with me to get some money for one. It was the best burger!!! Tomorrow we're off to Pompei and then board our overnight ferry tomorrow night.
