Day 35 Saturday 26th July
Cape Hillsborough to Eurimbula NP (600km)
We woke to a slight drizzle, so packed up fairly quickly, and without having breakfast, just in case the rain got any heavier.....it didn't!
It has been a long driving day today...(thanks Dave),...and a little bit boring!!
As usual, we were on the road by 8am. Once again, we were travelling through cane growing regions, and saw lots of cane haulage trucks and trains. We also saw lots of coal trains, travelling between Gladstone and Rockhampton. Travelling through Rocky was tedious with many, many, sets of traffic lights! No more remote outback roads on this trip!!
It has also been very overcast today, but no rain.
Because our intended destination for tonight was a little 'off the beaten track', we toyed with the idea of staying in a roadside 'free camp'. However the one we 'checked out' was so full with caravans by early afternoon, that we decided to drive on to the Eurimbula NP where we had a booked campsite. We have been to this campsite before, but seemed to have conveniently 'forgotten', the rough 15km road in, with 9km of a single lane sandy track! However, Dave's great driving skills safely got us to our destination, and fortunately we didn't meet another oncoming vehicle! Since our last visit here, the campsites are not numbered, so it's first in, best dressed. We were fortunate to secure a nice site with a view of the beach through the trees. The tide was out when we arrived, and over the course of the afternoon and evening, steadily came in. The noise of the incoming tide lulled us to sleep.....it is only this far south, without the protection of the Great Barrier Reef, that there is any rolling surf. In fact, the nearby town of Agnes Water has a sign proclaiming it to be the 'most northerly surf beach in Australia'. Just on sunset, a tour, 'duck bus' , arrived on the beach, having driven along the beach from the town of Seventeen Seventy. It was disappointing for those on board that they didn't get to enjoy the sunset...too cloudy tonight. I'm sure they had fun though!
