It is a beautiful sunny day so we decide to go to Newport by bus so that Brad can have a rest from driving. Almost outside our door is the bus to the middle of Providence to the bus station, then from there we catch a bus to Newport - a 70 minute trip. For $6 each, we buy a day pass which is pretty good value considering the distance we will cover today by bus. Newport is extremely busy considering the summer season is over and with that, the ferries no longer bring tourists. The streets and dockside areas are filled with exclusive clothing stores, restaurants & other touristy sites. A must-do we read about is the 4 mile long cliff walk along the coastline taking in the view of the multi million dollar mansions from another era which line this walk. Their sweeping lawns come right down to the coastal path. Most of these mansions are now in the hands of national preservation trusts and some can be inspected. They are indeed superb but in our opinion, the view of them from the tree lined streets is better than the view from the Atlantic Ocean side. Perhaps our walking on Sydney's coastal paths has spoiled us but we both feel that oceanside walks in Sydney are far superior to this one in Newport although the Newport mansions are just unbelievable.
