Awoke to a bright sunny and warm day in Antigua. The city is dominated by two volcanoes, one of which , Fuego, had a small eruption last year but now only spews out smoke and at night produces a spectacular red glowing cone which we can clearly see from the rooftop terrace of our hotel. Antigua was the former capital of Guatemala but in 1773, a major earthquake damaged most of the city and the Spanish Crown ordered the Capital to be moved to a new location, now Guatemala city. Some of the major buildings, destroyed in the earthquake are preserved in their ruinous state and are interesting to explore for a small entrance fee. The town has a very relaxed feel to it. Brightly painted buildings line the cobbled streets and Mayan women in traditional coloured woven costumes are everywhere. The people are noticeably shorter than the Nicaraguans.
All the street dogs look healthy and we notice that many of the hotels, shops and restaurants have food and water bowls set out for them at the entrance. Transport around the town is by cheap and cheerful moto taxis which shake us to bits as they rattle along the cobbled streets.
