After Tikal we have a couple of nights booked a short distance away at Hotel de don David in the very small town of El Remate on the opposite shores of Lake Peten from Flores.
This has been recommended to us by different people we've met on our travels,
The rooms are in garden bungalows and from the terrace restaurant, wild birds are fed from bird tables suspended from a trolley system which is cranked out by the staff so there is always plenty wildlife activity to watch from the hammocks and deck chairs.
At the other end of the garden there is a raised terrace with tables over looking the lake.. a great place to enjoy a beer watching the setting sun. A novel bar service has been installed to save having to walk to the main bar 70m away. There is a telephone to call up the main restaurant and place your drinks order. A zip wire trolley system known as the Toucan Express, complete with flashing lights so you know its coming, conveys the tray of drinks high above the garden to the raised terrace where you off load your order. Most people order a drink simply to experience the unique delivery service of the toucan express.
As a parting gift, we are invited to choose a locally carved wooden keyring of our choice. I take a wooden canoe while Elaine opts for a turtle.
