Emmett's Adventures
Alright Folks,
Fistly let me say that there isn't much reason to visit Bolivia or in fact Peru other than a few major sites. We were lucky enough to visit both that Bolivias have to offer. The first was the Salt Flats, quite impressive, but not worth coming all the way just for that. The second is the Potosi Silver Mines. The reason for visiting is due as much to the number of Bolivains that died in it (9 million) as how much siler was found in it. It is said that the amount of silver could have built bridge all the way to Spain and still have enough to carry over it.
Before we went we had to go to the miners market and buy some gifts for the miners. The most popular choice was dynamite followed by a 96% alcoholic drink. We also got them coca leaves, whcih are used to make cocaine, and some taboco. You can now see why so many of them died. If they weren't pissed they were high and than had to use dynamite. The funny thing was that the dynamite was cheaper than a botle of Pepsi and easy to get hold of.
At the mouth of the mine we were shown a demonstration of the powere of one stick of dynamite mixed with some other substance. It was very loud and not far enough away from us as bits of stone came flying at us. Luckily no one was hurt and the reason was they did it down wind of us.
The mines themselves were not all theçat easy to navigate and at times we were crawling on our bellies. The dust was the biggest issue and made it very difficult to breath. The guide was also terrible. He kept wandering off ahead and loosing the group. When we tried to tell him to slow down he put me at the front and i was to tell the group where to go and when to duck down. I have no idea why he put me at the front, i recon because i gave him some s*** aboiut wandering off. None the less we say some miners, one couldn't even walk he was so drunk and the others were very happy iwth a bag of booze and dynamite.
The tour (term used very loosly) lasted about 3 hours and we were all gald to get out. Needless to say no tip was given that day. From here we head for civilisation, Argentina, the city of Salta.
Until next time, Em & S.
