Emmett's Adventures
Alright Folks,
Hope you all had a great Christmas and are getting ready for New Years Eve. We are in Uyuni to visit the Salt Flats and the Train Graveyard. The Flats are the highest and largest in the world, and have a depth of 50cm at the edge and 250m at the centre. It is belived to have been a massive lake that at one time was connected to the ocean and as the eaths plates moved the mountains rose and cut it off from the ocean and slowly it evaporated.
The views were amazing and because it rained the night before we went out the reflections were beautiful. We also saw Cactus Island, an island very far into the lake totally covered with cati and corel. The oldest cati was over 1,200 years old. We got loads of pics and you will have to forgive me for all the arty ones. I have restained myself and only put a fraction of them on the web. You will have to buy my book to get the rest!!
We also visited a train graveyard. Uyuni used to be where all the trains went to go and be fixed but as the silver mines ran out of silver there were less trains and even less engineers to fix them and so the graveyard bacame a tourist attraction.
Let me not forget about the train the Buth Cassidy and the Sundance Kid robbed. We visited the town where they were killed by four police officers and not half the Bolivian army as the film would have you believe. Their story is quite a bit different than the film but thats entertainment for you.
From here we are heading back to potosi to visit the Silver mines.
Until next time, Em & S.
