17th & 18th June 2008: After a 12 hour day of traveling including two bus journeys (one with air conditioning turned up so high we were in danger of frostbite, and one with no ventilation whatsoever) and a boat ride - we finally made it to Caye Caulker - and it was so worth it! A small island off the coast of Belize, with sand streets and no cars (golf buggies instead!). Half an hour after getting there we were drinking beer at The Split, sitting at a bench which was a foot deep in clear warm water....heaven! To make it even better, every evening the 'cake man' comes round, selling the most delicious cake ever - I sampled quite a few! But can report that the chocolate coconut macaroon is possibly the best thing I will ever eat.
It's so laid back there that if you're walking slightly faster than a very slow stroll - you get told to 'go slow' - and to be honest there's no real reason to rush! After a night of dancing to reggae, we set off on a full day snorkel trip the next day - on the Rasta King!! We stopped off at three different sites, saw all sorts of gorgeous coral and fish but the best part was seeing four manatees! and a hawksbill turtle! and stingrays! and nurse sharks! And to top that off we had a sunset slow sail back to the island while drinking rum punch! After that it was off to a full moon party - we had to get a boat out there, I imagined dancing under the stars on the beach but in fact it was far more civilised, with a real bar and everything!
I could easily have stayed there for far, far longer but unfortunately the day after that we had to leave - but off to a jungle lodge which will hopefully not disapoint!
