We arrived in Koh Samui, I'm pretty sure it's the largest and most developed island and you could tell the difference straight away. On our way to the hotel I saw one of the best things I've seen yet - a monkey in a motorbike side car!! Hilarious.
Our hotel is lovely, 5 mins from the main strip & beach and it has an infinity pool on the roof (the green pond like water kind of spoils the awesomeness though).
Most of us did a little tour of the island, we had a driver that took us to some of the main spots. We started with more temples and Buddha's, to be honest I'm so bored with temples now but I have a feeling there are more to come. Next stop was a really cool view point overlooking the ocean, think that was my favourite. Then a mummified monk in a glass box, they'd put sunglasses on him to hide his hollow eye sockets. Extremely creepy and a bit odd, if you ask me there just aren't enough dead people displayed in England. Last up was the highlight apparently - a waterfall and elephants. The waterfall was more of a water trickle because of the season and the elephants were the saddest sight I've seen. There were 2 tied up that looked very distressed rocking from side to side, some of the group paid to ride them....I chose not. I do understand people want the elephant experience while they're here but it's just a shame that they didn't get chance to visit the place I did in Laos.
In the evening we went for street food which was excellent and you guessed it...cheap! Cocktails were about £1.30 and I had a jacket potato, spring roll, massive corn on the cob & salad for £2.
We walked from one end of the island to the other (or it felt that far anyway) to go to the free ladyboy show, it felt like we had a bargain until they wanted £5 for a small beer. After we went to the beach party which was very cool, a mixture of people that looked too young to be out so late and very old men (we know why you're in Thailand)...I think I was somewhere in the middle. On the beach amongst all the dancing were guys with iguanas, monkeys and even an eagle trying to get money for photos. The music and atmosphere were good, I can imagine it would be even better in high season.
I had a little explore and not much else the second day, I even tried to do some exercise! The gym looked good from outside, but when I stepped on the treadmill my foot almost went through it & the bike had no power....oh well the thought was there.
Dinner tonight was great again, strawberry smoothie, fresh noodles, pork kebabs and a chocolate/banana crepe for £2.50. Sitting on plastic chairs in the street with some live music was pretty good. A good last meal to remember Thailand, tomorrow we leave for Malaysia. I've loved it here and seen some weird and wonderful stuff but I'm definitely ready to for the next place and some new experiences.
