We were up early doors on Tuesday morning and caught a flight from Wellington to Christchurch. Good old Qantas even got a complementry muffin during our 45 min flight. Once we arrived at Christchurch we picked up our little baby Nissan Pulsar (wit woo ha ha) from the car rental place. Then we were off "on the road again" (our new favourite song) like Thelma and Louise (well more like Max and Paddy really). Took us a little while to get into the hang of driving a automatic but its so easy I dont think I can ever drive a manual again.
We drove west along Arthurs Pass and through the Southern Alps. The scenery was absolutely beautiful. We stopped fro lunch at a small cafe by the side of the road which looked like something out of a movie (I'm thinking Wolf Creek here) and hadn't had a customer in years but got a lovely toasted sandwich and head off again. Took us about 6 hours and eventually we reached Franz Josef Glacier.
We were so tired after the early start and the long drive we just grabbed some tea then had a really early night. In the morning we had planned to go trekking on the glacier but the weather wasn't too brilliant and there was a lot of low cloud so decided it wouldn't be worth it. Instead we just drove up to the bottom of both Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers (the one in the photo above) and had a quick look and took some photos. Then we headed off to Wanaka.
