It was Liv's birthday so we had some nice things planned for the day with lots of photo opportunities. We walked uphill to the cable car station and took it all the way up to El Alto, a small town within La Paz overlooking the city centre which now has a population almost as large! The cable cars were built as a means of transport between the main city and El Alto and so is mostly used for locals to get to work etc.
The views from the all glass cable car were incredible and La Paz is clearly such a vast city, literally built within and on a canyon (a V shaped city with mountains either side of the lower city centre). As El Alto is more of a local residential area, besides the views there was not much else to see or do so we caught the cable car back down again. With three current lines and many more planned the La Paz aerial cable car system is currently the most extensive in the world, also containing the longest line. It's really nice that it's used as a local way of transportation!
Back in the main town we went for a lovely four course celebratory lunch at a slightly fancier restaurant. With a salad bar and bread to start it was such a treat, followed by soup, steak and vegetables and then desert - yum!
We made our way up to a viewpoint in the afternoon, which involved and extremely steep climb uphill that thankfully was very much worth it. The view was beautiful and panoramic of the city, with snowcapped mountain peaks in the distance. With the blazing sunshine it was so pleasant up there and so we stayed a while, not only to catch our breath but to admire our surroundings and take a lot of photos.
Back at the hostel we got ready for an alcohol fuelled evening at the bar -the hostel bar is really great. We got chatting to lots of people, including two guys who went to Uni in Leeds and a few who lived in Harrow (small world) and the rum and cokes came pouring in. Of course we got more and more drunk and ended up performing an absolutely humiliatingly bad attempt at a beer pong tournament in our drunken states! Liv ended up stood on the bar doing three birthday shots and from then on everything spiralled a little down hill.... The shots pushing her over the edge and leading the two of us to a drunken slumber after a very funny night. Happy 22nd Liv!
