Hi Guys!!
Friday, as the weather was hotting up we decided to head down to the Pet Porpoise Pool, this is located about 10 mins walk from the hostel. It is an interactive sanctuary which is home to dolphins, sealions and lots of other marine life.
We spent some time looking around the large fish and port jackson sharks, we were then given the opportunity to get dolphin and sealion kisses. Emma got a kiss off a sealion, which as you can imagine was very wet and sloppy - so Lee opted out. We both got dolphin kisses - Very Cool!! We then made our way to the grandstand for the main show. At the start of the show, we fed Soloman the giant sealion, who at the age of 19 years has outlived his life expectancy of 15.
The show was great, filled with tricks and acrobatics, and many facts about dolphins; such as - they can weigh up to 200kg, they can hold 2/3 of their body out of water, and they can jump up to 6m high. They also have exceptional eye sight in and out of the water.
After the show we spent some time feeding the little blue penguins and the sharks, before heading to the dolphin play pool. Here you can touch and stroke the dolphins, and even get the chance to play catch. We spent a few hours here before dragging ourselves away. This was amazing! We really enjoyed our day here and would recommend to anyone visiting Coffs.
Saturday, it was another hot day so we decided to take a walk down to the marina and across to Mutton Bird Island. As it turns out it is not an island, it is attached to the main land (do the Aussies know what they're talking about??).
Here thousands of Mutton birds nest, and bring up their young in little burrows under the ground. At this time of year you can hear all the chicks in their nests (and smell them - they stink!!). We walked all the way across the 'island' to the lookout point on the other side. From here you can see whales as they migrate - July to October - Damm it!! We did get great views of the ocean and Coffs Harbour!
To cool off after our walk we returned to the hostel for a dip in the pool - Nice!
We have had a great time in Coffs, we love the place and the YHA - the best we've stayed in!!
Cheers Guys, See you later,
Lee and Emma
